meet OUR COACHES

>> GARY HULL has coached basketball at the 2A level for 38 years, amassing a record of 786/254 wins/losses at Western Mennonite, now Western Christian, in Salem, making him the second winningest coach in Oregon overall as of Spring, 2025 and the winningest active coach. To this point, Gary has chosen to do this at the same school, rather than moving around to programs with more promising talent due to his focus on building his teams from the ground up. His success is due to his investment of time in young players, equipping them with the fundamentals of the game and continuing that focus with his high school teams.
He has previous coaching experience at Canby and Molalla High Schools. Gary has 22 state appearances, the last 19 years consecutively, which is a state record at all levels, 9 appearances in the state final, the last 5 consecutively, and 4 State Championships.
Gary is happily married with 2 children, daughter-in-law and one granddaughter. He enjoys spending time with his family, travelling, and cheering on The Green Bay Packers. His Christian faith is the most important thing in his life. He credits that to the values he models as a coach.

>> MADI HULL the player and the coach, is the product of her father, Coach Gary Hull. He began coaching both Madi and her brother Keaton, on his “Little Rascals” travel teams when it became apparent to him that fundamentals were lacking at that level. As a result, a focus on fundamentals is all she’s known.
She was a 4-year starting guard/point guard at Western Mennonite School in Salem. Her high school team made it to the 2A State Tournament in Pendleton all 4 years she played and they made it to the Championship game 3 of those 4 years, winning the title game during her sophomore year.
She held several school records following her senior year and as of 2024 holds the following 2A State Tournament Records:
>All tournament points - 82
>All tournament free-throws attempted - 44
>All tournament free-throws made - 34
>Game high free throws 18/20 (2-way tie)
Madi went on to play basketball in college for four years. Two of those years were at George Fox University in Newberg, where she played for Michael Meek, before he left for the University of Portland. She then transferred to Southern California where she played for The Master’s University Mustangs, in Santa Clarita.
She has 2 successful coaching seasons under her belt. One year with Western Christian where she took the girls’ basketball team back to the 2A State tournament in 2023 for the first time since 2017, and in her first season (‘24-’25) with Perrydale Pirates, she helped the girls get to the first round of the state playoffs. She was awarded Co-Coach of the Year in the Casco League, ‘24-’25 season.
Madi enjoys travelling, especially the backroads of Oregon, reading, and attending basketball games with her dad. Her faith is something essential to her.

>> DAVID CROWE is a lifelong Oregonian, a devoted father of four, a husband of 28 years, an entrepreneur, an educator of 10 years, and a man of faith. David has coached developmental youth sports for 13 years as a head coach, led the rebirth of a high school boys basketball varsity program at the 1A level, and has been an assistant coach at the high school varsity level.
David played for Coach Gary Hull at Western Mennonite (now Western Christian) in the mid-90s, returned to Western as a teacher, and loved the opportunity to serve with his lifelong friend and mentor as an assistant coach during the 2023-24 state championship season. Coach Crowe does not have a wins and losses record to tout, but his foundational coaching philosophy is based on the fundamental skill development of players. “Experience before wins” is the guiding principle he builds his teams upon. While Coach Crowe is just as competitive as the next coach, he believes that fundamental player development is vastly more important than “wins or losses” at the youth level. When a player develops a fundamentally sound skill set and a dedicated work ethic, the “wins” will follow as they age. With a belief that nothing refines and develops player skills like in-game experiences on the basketball floor, he promotes growth opportunities as much as possible with an “everybody plays” mentality. Coupled with an emphasis on character growth through a focus on sportsmanship, work ethic, teamwork, grit, and humble yet hungry competition, Coach Crowe believes the condition of the heart of young players is paramount. Simply put, he is adamant about planting, protecting, and fostering the love of the game of basketball within young players. With the vast majority of his coaching experience in the early childhood development stages of elementary and middle school athletics Coach Crowe believes that focusing on fundamentals and gaining real-time game speed experience in today's game will grant our young players an advantage. Thus putting them on a path to success at higher levels as they continue to grow and develop.
When David is not working to grow his business, teaching, or coaching, he enjoys camping, gardening, and tinkering with vehicles. He especially loves spending time with his family and friends and being anywhere near a lake or the ocean.
